Most weeks, Shanti Yoga Glasgow's Ashtanga Yoga classes in the West End of Glasgow has new beginners so don't worry, your not on your own! I recommend you read the below before attending class-

First of all you need to make the decision on whether you want to start at the slower paced and more in detail 'beginner class'. You may decide that you want to take your time, introducing yourself to yoga or you may simply want a more slowly paced, less challenging class. A lot of people start at a beginner class for a couple of weeks or more, then move up to the general class when they feel ready.

If you want a more challenging class that is more core and strength based, that is really going to give you quicker results to any weaknesses in your body, then the 'general class' maybe better for you. Most beginners who start at the stage, normally start to find their feet within a few classes. Shanti Yoga 'general classes' are high energy yoga classes, your first yoga class may seem daunting and tough but throughout the class, easier options are given for beginners. Please take the easier option in your first few classes until you have an idea about how the classes and yoga works and till you know more about what stage you are at.

Whatever class you are in, take your time going from pose to pose and synchronise your breath with your movements. Your breath is the most important part of yoga so even try and focus on that first and then start to think about perfecting your poses.

Remember that yoga poses are not a destination, they are a progression and don't ever compare yourself with other people in the class. Everyone's body is different and certain people will be better at certain poses naturally. Yoga is non-competitive. Take your time in the poses and try not to push yourself too hard. Enjoy each stage of your poses. Be aware of your limitations but challenge yourself at the same time.

If you take your time with your yoga and stay focused, your progression will come quickly. This is your yoga practice and your 'me' time. Enjoy it, flow with your breath and see where your body is going to take you in each class.

Take a rest at any point during the yoga class. Don't be afraid to ask questions at the end of class about certain poses or parts of the class that you are having difficulty with. Any feedback is always welcomed, bad or good.

Personal home programs can be emailed to each individual so that some practice can be done at home as to develop a comfort with yoga and to work on individual weaknesses.
